Congressman Gary Peters (D. MI-14), who is running for Senator Carl Levin's (D. MI) seat, must be all smiles today:

U.S. Rep. Gary Peters has already raised more than $1-million for his U.S. Senate run next year, giving him a vital leg up as he puts money away for a 2014 general election campaign.

Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, remains the only Democrat of note to enter the race to replace U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, a fellow Democrat who is retiring at the end of his current term.

Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is mounting a run for the Republican nomination, but that party’s field still remains somewhat unsettled with U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, R-Cascade Township, and perhaps others, not yet making their intentions known. - Detroit Free Press, 7/8/13

Peters fundraising this quarter is helping him fuel a winning campaign:

Peters, the likely Democratic nominee to replace retiring Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), has $1.8 million cash on the hand, his campaign announced in an email to supporters. That's a good start for the congressman, who's known as a strong fundraiser.

"It's exciting to see the outpouring of support from Michiganders who back Gary's fight to stand up for middle class families and small businesses in the U.S. Senate," Peters for Michigan campaign manager Julie Petrick said. "This strong showing is a testament to the work Gary's done to put Michigan first and the leaps we're making as a team to build the strongest grassroots campaign Michigan has ever seen." - The Hill, 7/8/13

Peters' GOP opponent, Former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, finally filed her paperwork for her Senate campaign and will need to catch up to Peters fast in fundraising if she wants to make this campaign competitive:

Land announced plans to run June 3 and said Monday that she’s followed up with a filing. She says she’ll spend the next several months listening to voters across Michigan and says the public deserves “a lot better from Washington.” - Detroit Free Press, 7/8/13
One of the major benefits of having Peters in the Senate is that he will be fighting hard for a pro-environmental agenda as a U.S. Senator.  You can read more about his environmental record and his ongoing fight to crack down on pet coke here:

Not to mention Peters is a great friend or organized labor and is fighting to protect automobile manufacturing jobs from the Trans=Pacific Partnership, which you can read more about here:

Michigan might be blue but because Peters fight to clean up the Koch Brothers' pet coke mess in Detroit will create a powerful enemy and we need to keep his campaign well fueled.  If you you would like to donate or get involved with Peters' campaign, you can do so here:
